The earliest settlements of the area date back to 1802, but it was not until the Sells family arrived from Huntingdon, PA that the village of Dublin truly began to take shape. Peter and Benjamin Sells purchased 400 acres of land located on the western bank of the Scioto River as a gift for their brother, John. In the year 1808, John Sells brought his family to the region. In 1810, he began surveying lots with an Irish gentleman named John Shields, who named the town after his birthplace.
By the year 1833, Dublin contained several mills and only one store, and remained a small town through most of the 1900s. It experienced rapid growth after the construction of I-270 and the growth of the Muirfield Village Golf Club and its residential subdivision. Dublin was declared a city in 1987 after reaching a population of 5,000 residents. Dublin increased in size significantly, and eventually annexed parts of Washington, Perry, Concord, and Jerome townships.
