The History of Hyde Park

Hyde Park was established in 1892 by a number of prominent businessmen in Cincinnati who wanted to create a community specifically designed for the city’s wealthy residents. The neighborhood was named after and inspired by the lifestyle of New York’s vibrant Hyde Park area. The men purchased all the land in the area now known as Hyde Park and carefully began shaping the community. They even monitored the prospective residents, selling only to the buyers they deemed suitable for the lifestyle they were crafting. Hyde Park was annexed by the City of Cincinnati in November of 1903, becoming its own independent neighborhood.

Hyde Park is an affluent neighborhood on the east side of Cincinnati. The heart of Hyde Park lies in Hyde Park Square, a two-block area with a park in the center surrounded by more than 175 retail shops and restaurants. The square is home to the famous Graeter’s Ice Cream parlor, which has been present since 1938. The neighborhood boasts a pleasant, picturesque atmosphere, complete with holiday events in the winter and summer art shows. Residents may easily travel to and from Hyde Park’s shops, restaurants, parks and churches, enjoying spectacular views of the Ohio River all the while.

Annexed by the city of Cincinnati in 1903, Hyde Park is considered one of Cincinnati’s oldest yet trendiest places to live. Located just a few miles from the heart of downtown, it is a quaint enclave of great schools, preserved parks, and architectural beauty. The Hyde Park Art Show is an annual event featuring more than 200 artists from the Cincinnati area and throughout the nation. The Hyde Park Farmers’ Market meets on a weekly basis throughout the summer months, offering locally grown, fresh produce and specialty items. Throughout the summer, the community hosts several running and bicycling events for all ages, and each holiday season, the neighborhood hosts the Annual Hyde Park Tree Lighting. Ault Park is a 224-acre park in Hyde Park featuring a lookout point, picnic shelters, playgrounds, nature trails, gardens, and a beautiful pavilion.
