The History of Grove City

In the beginning of the 19^th century, the area now known as Grove City was a wilderness area filled with oak, beech, maple, walnut, dogwood, and other tree varieties. The area’s first settler was Hugh Grant, who operated a gristmill in Pittsburgh and purchased land in the area in 1803. Grant and his wife were the first European settlers to arrive. Unfortunately, Grant died shortly after his arrival to the Grove City area.

The city’s founder, William F. Breck, visited the area and purchased 15.25 acres of farmland from Grant’s son, Hugh Grant, Jr., and an additional 300 acres to the west. Soon after, Breck formed a commission with three other men, George Weygandt, William Sibray, and Jeremiah Smith, and platted a village on the east side of Broadway. By the end of 1853, the newly formed village of Grove City had 50 residents. The town was named as such after the remaining groves of trees in the area.

The city operates three parks, a destination garden, a senior center, a family-oriented water park, and a skate park. Fryer Park features an award-winning all-access playground called Discovery Frontier. For a city that got its name from a grove of trees, it is only fitting that Grove City is home to the Gardens at Gantz Farm and Arboretum, featuring 10 different gardens and a wide variety of plants and herbs.
