The History of Strongsville

In the early 1800s, an area in Northeast Ohio known as the Western Reserve attracted emigration from Connecticut, Vermont, and parts of New England. Portions of land were sold by the state to the Connecticut Land Company and divided amongst organization members. The area now known as Strongsville was sold to Oliver Ellsworth of Hartford, and was later inherited by his sons, William W. and Henry L. In 1815, the two brothers sold a portion of the land to John Stoughton Strong of Marlboro, who the town was eventually named after. Strongsville officially became a township in 1818, a village in 1923, and ultimately, a city in 1961.

 During the mid-19^th century, the Pomeroy House—originally called The Homestead—was a stop on the underground railroad. The homeowner—Alanson Pomeroy—was a prominent Strongsville resident who concealed runaway slaves on his property. From this resting point, the runaway slaves were taken to boats on the Rocky River for passage into Canada.
